The rise of the Tablet is part of a wider movement to call what Intel companion for the calculation, a category which includes all sort of personal and mobile devices from smartphones to netbooks, and sliders. In the case of Computex today, Intel executives said companion computer is still in early stages and discussed strategy for atom chips in these devices.
Intel believes that not one companion computer systems will work for all, and that there will be many innovations in hardware and software as companies developer experiences for different users over the next 10 years. But “starts with silicon,” says Doug Davis, Vice President and GM of the Netbook and Tablet group.
Intel introduces Atom before three year and it will ship its 100 millionth Atom SoC this month. But in most of these in netbooks and most mobile devices using processors, on the basis of ARM microarchitecture designed by companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas instruments and Nvidia and produced by semiconductor foundries. Intel strategy to divide the tablets and Smartphones is for the allocation of its lead in the process of technology and production.
Davis, confirmed that for the next few years, the atom would scale a faster pace than Moore’s law, while it does not catch up with Intel Core processors for personal computers and servers. The first 32nm Atom SoCs will start shipping in volume production later this year, followed by the 22nm Ivy Bridge versions in 2013 2014 will be aligned atom and core of 14nm.
“Intel gets this and we are investing in this area,” says Davis. “We are accelerating our technology roadmap process.”
But today, Intel still is shipping several 45nm Atom SoCs. This includes a series of n for netbooks. Intel demonstrated the Asus EEE PC X 101, 10-inch netbooks, announced at Computex that uses Atom processor and operating system of the MeeGo and costs around $ 200. One of the first laptops to use the Google OS, Samsung’s 12-inch Chromebook series 5, there is a dual processor Atom N570.
Another 45nm SoC, Z670 of atom or oak trail, is designed specifically for tablets. It has a smaller footprint and uses less power, but there’s still a performance for tasks such as 1080p video playback (as well as HDMI). In Computex event, Intel showed a number of PRINCIPAL (manufacturer of the original device) designs as “shipping systems and platforms for the developments”-running Android 3.0 honeycomb. Intel also demonstrated interesting Fujitsu LifeBook slider and slate Fujitsu Stylistic Windows for business.
The first 32nm Atom SoCs will be Cedar trail and Medfield. Davis says that scales the Cedar trail from basic desktops to netbooks fan less. He said the Cedar trail will have twice the graphic quality of the current atom N455, but there are 55% lower thermal design point, which translates to longer battery life, and thin devices. Intel develops prototype convertible PC, code-named Keeley Lake, which is the thickness to show what can be possible with cedar trail only 19 mm.
Cedar trail will also include several by Intel is calling “Experience characteristics,” which basically means additional features developed by Intel, which include software and hardware, close cooperation. Douglas listed six experience features, including wireless display to Intel, smart link, quick launch, the app up PC synch and Ericsson 3 G many of them have the same features that Intel has been demonstrating its ultrabooks and other computers.
Medfield is designed smartphones and tablets. Davis held a silicon wafer containing Medfield SoCs as well as a reference design of Medfield tablet running the honeycomb.
He said Medfield will be competitive with HAND-based SoCs as regards consumption, standby, as well as with other loads “and will support Android and MeeGo tablets under 9 mm thick and weighing less than 1.5 pounds. Davis also noted that Intel will ship the third Atom SoC, 32nm, code-named clover trail, in 2012, but he offered no details. Ivy bridge, which used a new transistor design, will bring further improvements in performance and power, but Davis argued also is highly tunable to meet the needs of a range of different devices.
Doug Fisher, Vice President of Intel’s software and services group, talked about the work the company has to make multiple mobile operating systems, including Android, Windows, chrome OS and MeeGo works well on x 86 microarchitecture. To illustrate, he showed three identical tablets honeycomb, Windows 7 and MeeGo. One of the tablets of the display can even develop III, and shall carry out all three and Fisher said there will be more of these multi-OS devices. Initially they will require a reboot to switch between operating systems, but this will be followed by virtualization solutions that will make this trick possible in movement.
MeeGo has gotten a slow Start, but Intel pushed that there is a real demand for open source operating system compatible Apis that work in all the devices and can be customized by hardware companies to differentiate their products. In addition to the Asus netbook Fischer said more MeeGo devices are on the road, including tablets, and based on MeeGo in car entertainment systems are already shipping. David Lee, the Acer Vice President of mobile PCs, publicly demonstrated running MeeGo with an interesting Task Manager user tasks tablet of 10-inch Acer. He also talked about-one netbook with MeeGo that Acer customized to provide their own user interface for the social network, and Acer Chromebook that uses Atom regions
