The surprise of Computex press conference today AMD is as much about what the company did not reveal what discussion. The processor of the Llano, the first mainstream APU of the company and its first processor of 32nm, is largely the no-show. Instead, AMD announced a new line of APUs for tablets, known as the Z series.

AMD wants to put the best possible spin on the absence of Llano. Company executives said the Llano has been shipping for customers and will start a separate event in mid-June.

“We’re done with Ontario. Now we’re done with the Llano. We are busy working on the next best thing, “said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD products group.

To illustrate this, he held to what he said was one of the first Trinity Apus, the processor, which will replace the Llano in 2012. AMD confirmed that Llano Apus will be branded series and available in A4, A6 and A8 versions, but these data are already widely known.

Bergman also said that the high class Zambezi processor of AMD, which is a traditional CPU intended for systems with discrete graphics “was looking great” (although he offered no details), and adds that the server version of the Orochi is on track for release in the third quarter.

AMD to announce the 9 series that supports system with the Zambezi processors. It is now available and will start to appear in the motherboards of the clients of the AMD next month.

But the news from the z series APU for tablets. Many details of the series z has expired at Computex, but there have been several new data. Code-named Desna, the first z series APU will work for less than 6 Watts and will be designed for the Windows-based Tablet.

“I am many of you are skeptical about the success of Windows in a Tablet world,” says Chris Cloran, AMD Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the computer.

Although z series tablets will be designed for the Windows, some may also run Android. Rosen Sharma, Executive Director of marketing, called Bluestacks, is onstage to demonstrate how the company’s software can run Windows and Android-based Tablet the same Brazos. Demo is very short, however, and others who have seen the software in action of ViewSonic ViewPad 10Pro of the show floor were less than impressed.

AMD did not say how many design wins, he is the z series. Desna will be replaced in 2012 by a new APU for tablets, known as Hondo. And low power Ontario and Zacate APUs, sent earlier this year and is notched 165 notebook and desktop design wins under Cloran, will be replaced by Krishna. AMD does not provide any new details about these APUs 2012.

Several AMD customers came onstage to show existing and new products that use fusion Apus, including Acer Iconia W500 Tablet Asus N series laptop, HP Pavilion dm1 and Pavilion dv series Lenovo ThinkPad edge series and (very briefly) the MSI tablet.

Ultimately the postponement of the launch of the Llano for another few weeks probably does not make much difference as AMD does not miss the chance to go back to school season. Right now there is no indication that it will be. But in view of its long gestation period and advance production delays, Llano is evident from the absence of Computex.

[Update: while I was surprised that AMD formally launches Llano in Computex, APU has been shipping for customers from at least early April and AMD noted that formal launch will occur before the end of the second quarter on the plan.]
