AMD is working on a new fusion processor, designed specifically for tablets, according to leaked company presentation. Z-series APU (code-named Desna) will be used less energy, increasing battery life of 10,5 hours, but there are still processing power to handle HD video, and other intense computing tasks on the basis of the slides, published on the site to Android community.

The news is not a surprise. Since CEO Dirk Meyer left the company after the Consumer Electronics Show in January, there has been speculation that AMD has refocused its non-nuclear strategy of the tablets. The first AMD APUs, series C (Ontario) and E-series (Zacate) are not intended for tablets, but their design of low power places them within striking distance. In fact the W500 tab Acer Iconia, 10.1-inch tablet with Windows Mobile keyboard is already using 1.0 GHz AMD C-50 dual processor.

The slides do not contain many details in the design of the Z-series, but is likely to be based on the same Bobcat core of low consumption of energy used in the current C-E-series and APUs, perhaps with lower frequencies, more aggressive power management or less graphics cores stretch battery life. He promises to increase the battery life of the design of 6.5 hours on the platform of 2010 to 10,5 hours during this year ‘ s tablet, although it is not clear what AMD means from the platform of 2010 since the series did not arrive until earlier this year. Z-series is part of the tablet of the AMD platform for HD, a name that is intended to emphasise that the APU with DirectX 11 graphics can handle HD video streaming, hardware acceleration (Internet Explorer 9, HTML 5, Adobe Flash 10.2, and Microsoft Office 10) and 3D games.

With this Tablet platform AMD is aimed at all sectors, including consumer, small business and verticals such as healthcare. On the basis of the slides, it is clear that AMD is focusing on Windows 7/Windows 8, in particular for business users and it is not clear whether the Z-series also works with Android as well (although there have been reports that AMD is looking for Android software engineers).

With the addition of Z-series AMD will have APUs with “discrete class schedule”, covering a wide range of products. In addition to the Z-series for tablets, C-series netbooks and E-series ultra-thin laptops, AMD is expected to finally its A4 and A6 APUs for mainstream laptops and desktop computers-including everything-in-the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan this week.

AMD claimed more than 145 design wins for this customer platform that includes features such as AMD constant video that smooths, bezrazborni video; The Turbo core 2.0 for higher productivity; and AMD wireless display, which is probably of AMD response technology Intel wireless display. For high-end AMD will have A8, quad-or six-core Processor (code-named Zambezi) intended to be used with discrete graphics.

Intel has its own Tablet platform known oak trail, and the company are expected to show approximately 10 tablets, on the basis of the new atom SoC at Computex. Oak trace supports Windows, Android (Froyo and Gingerbread now with honeycomb in the works) and MeeGo.
